A View From Brigham & Women's

Just got back from hospital a little while ago where I caught up with Rich and several supportive friends in the very nice accommodations for friends and family at the Brigham. Rich had been given one of those big square buzzers that either let you know your Panera order is ready or that your loved one is through surgery and the doctor will see you now. Of course Kate got buzzed earlier in the morning in a much more woo-woo kinda way - Rich said her nerves calmed right down after they gave her some meds.

It was great to see Rich getting support and it was really great that 1.5 hours into surgery he hadn't been buzzed which meant that once the surgeon was in there he felt he could keep going and remove tumor. There seems to be some discrepancy re: how long surgery might last but Rich has a lovely zen-like view of acceptance and wishing the team to just focus on task at hand.

I saw my friend Lucy, a nurse at the Brigham, after leaving Rich and Leo at the fabulous Food Court. She keeps telling me good stories about how Brigham nurses ADORE Kate's surgeon, Dr. Sugarbaker. Today's comment, "He never takes out more than he needs to." Amen to that.
